For instance, you should first check the size of the mattress that you are interested in against the size of the crib that you have, however remember that because most cribs and crib mattresses are made to a standard size these days, that usually any mattress will fit any crib and so this should not be a problem.

You need to check just to make sure however, and when doing this remember that the baby crib mattress should fit snugly in the crib frame, and you should not be able to fit more than one of your fingers in between the actual crib and the mattress, and this goes for all the way around the entire crib. As well, remember that you need to be looking for a firm mattress, as babies need a more solid surface to sleep on.

If you want to be sure that the mattress you are interested in is firm enough to be safe for your baby, you can check by picking it up, placing your hands in the middle on opposite sides, and squeezing; basically the harder it is to squeeze the firmer it will be.

There is also the option of foam or coils however this is really not important, the most important thing is to make sure that the mattress is firm in structure. However you will typically find that the foam mattresses are usually less expensive than coil mattresses, and they are also light and easy to pick up if you need to pick the mattress up to change the sheets, for instance.
